Race-Based Graduation Celebrations

National Association of Scholars’ Ashley Thorne posted race-based graduation celebration announcements from Chico State University’s web site, for Asians, Latinos, and blacks. These ceremonies are not separate from the school, but endorsed by the school.

Par for the course. What would impress me is a “White-European Graduation Celebration.” That would stir things up.

Chico State — despite its established reputation as the leading “party university” of the 23 CSU campuses — should know better than to segment its post-graduation festivities by race.

I suppose the university’s administration would justify this “partying by pigment” as merely doing what every other campus does: “celebrate diversity.” Never mind that some of us would call it “celebrating divisiveness.”

One wonders — what’s next? Handing out diplomas by race, color and sexual orientation under the guise of “celebrating our differences?” I wouldn’t be surprised.

It boggles the mind that the majority of today’s academics are unable (unwilling?) to see the connection between the divisive “diversity” practices in today’s academy and the past segregationist policies of our nation’s south. Yet both share at least one major trait: pure, unadulterated racism — and both warrant our strongest condemnation.

Partying by pigment–I like the phrase, Sylvia. ;)
